I tried ice skating, and Jack Daniels. Not at the same time of course. I fell many times, and couldn’t skate to save my life. My balance and control was rubbish but it was my first time. The Jack Daniels, was awful. Damn stuff burned my throat and tasted like something you give to a kid with sore throat or the flu. Like cough syrup or something vile.

That’s all.

I didn’t really acquire my taste for whiskey until I was 25. But it was much earlier than that that I had my first taste of single malt scotch, which while still tasting like burning helped me understand why people enjoy whiskey. Now, I enjoy whiskey enough that it creates financial pressure.

My friends and I drank a lot and during skating last night. I’m rubbish at it, too, but it didn’t help that I used a pair of skates that belonged to my friend and they were incredibly painful. I thought the arches in my feet were going to disintegrate.

Skating gets better with practice but you really gotta start on smooth indoor ice instead of the potentially awful shit outdoors.

Jack Daniels, on the other hand, is awful with practice or none. We don’t get a lot of American whiskey in Ontario, but I do enjoy Woodford Reserve and Knob Creek very much.

Well, it doesn’t help that Jack Daniels isn’t good whiskey, people who say they don’t like whiskey after drinking Jack have as much credibility as people who say they don’t like beer after trying Coors Light.

It's much better with ginger. That being said alcohol kinda sucks no matter what. You don't need to drink it, I rarely do.

Jack Daniels is shitty shitty liquor. Please don’t be like so many other people I know who have based their entire opinion of alcohol on one or two really cheap, lousy shots.

Also ice skating! Fun but tough to get the hang of. It’s been a couple years since I’ve gone but I think the first trip is the worst, by the second you’ll be figuring it out.

Skating is one of the most exhilarating things I’ve done at the slowest pace.

I only have opportunities to skate about once a year, which translates in me being horrid at it. But when I am in front of the ring I think “Ah, what the hell!” and have a good time trying not to fall.

I did some side reading on this, apparently ethanol stimulates the same receptors in the mouth as capsaicin, so having a taste for spicy foods is highly correlated with having a taste for liquor. In both cases, exposure will cause the response to lessen and make the other, better flavors of liquor more clear to your mouth. In the interim, having liquor on the rocks or chilled lessens the extent of the reaction, and you may also enjoy something like an Old-fashioned which still tastes like liquor, but isn’t really burn-y because the real proof is lower.

Jack is only ok. Not great. I don’t like to drink it straight. If you want to get into liquor you need to try something better. Glenlivet 12 is a good single malt scotch to try

You will learn when it comes to Whiskey that if you don't enjoy the taste now, you won't enjoy it later on. My dad's let me sample his Irish Whiskey multiple times in my life, and no matter what age or what brand, it always tastes like lighter fluid to me.

Jack Daniels is cheap whiskey with a big marketing budget. A less-cheap whiskey with no marketing is usually better.

Try better alcohol. I’m a bourbon fan. Jack is related to, but NOT actually bourbon. I prefer bourbon with a little ice and then I let it breathe for a bit before drinking.

Try Johnny Walker and Coke, it’s an eye-opener in that regard (although a waste of perfectly decent whiskey and mixer, IMO). Or then again, don’t, because alcohol’s an acquired taste, and the people I know who’ve never bothered to acquire it seem to be the only happy non-drinkers.

Size of the brewery. You’ve got your massive operations that make things like Budweiser, Coors, Miller, etc. And you’ve got your stuff made in small batches for a largely local clientele that eventually you might distribute further.

If you go to a bar try a cocktail instead like an Old Fashioned or a Manhattan. You can google them to see what the ingredients usually are, it is much much more smooth than drinking alcohol straight. Try a margarita or something like a Bahama Mama or Sex on the Beach which infuse some fruit juice to make it more tolerable, just be careful as it will be easy to drink more than one drink when everything tastes so light and sweet so make sure you drink water.
